About this Facility

Counseling Services

For children, we offer individual, family, and group therapy.  For young children, we offer play therapy.  We offer counseling regarding behavioral and attentional problems in children.

For children and adults, we offer counseling regarding mood or anxiety problems, relationship and adjustment issues, and stress management.  We are not able to offer psychiatric treatment or medication management.

Psychoeducational Assessment Services

We conduct psychoeducation assessments for students ages 3 through 21 regarding learning difficulties, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, social-emotional concerns, and autism spectrum disorders.

Family Approach

Because we are a child and family center, we involve parents in the services we provide for their children.  This means that parents may meet regularly with a clinician while their child is receiving individual counseling, or that parents and children receive family counseling together.  With parents’ input, we develop a better understanding of their children and are able to offer suggestions to help children be more successful.

Individuals We Can Serve

There are no geographic limitations to our services.

We value the differences and similarities among people and respect the varied identities of clients and communities with whom we work.  The Child and Family Services Center does not discriminate of the basis of race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, familial status, pregnancy, predisposing genetic characteristics, military or veteran status, domestic violence victim status, criminal conviction or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.

Confidentiality

All services are provided in a confidential manner with respect to your personal information.

Costs

Like most professionals, we provide services for a fee.  However, we have a sliding fee schedule based upon income and the family size.  There is no fee for those with Medicaid or Child Health Plus insurance.  In general, no one will be turned away simply because of an inability to pay.

The Lea R. Powell Institute for Children and Families

The Lea R. Powell Institute for Children and Families is an organizing entity for the research, training, and service missions of the Division of Counseling and School Psychology. The Powell Institute was founded in 1994 with a grant provided by Mrs. Lea Rood Powell. Mrs. Powell and her husband, Arthur L. Powell, Chairman of the Alfred University Board of Trustees (1989-1995), have been dedicated and generous supporters of multiple Alfred University campus projects. A permanent location for the Institute was established in 2002, by building an addition to the Child and Family Services Center. This expanded facility houses office space for the Institute Director, the endowed Powell Chair in Psychology and Schooling, the Director of the CFSC, and research and program operation facilities for Institute grant projects.  It also includes the Welter Library, a resource library of therapeutic and reference materials for school psychology faculty, students, and area professionals. The Institute also provides a setting for division seminars, classes, and graduate student research and study.

The mission of the Lea R. Powell Institute is to support and expand the Alfred University Division of Counseling and School Psychology's programs and activities that effect positive change in the lives of children and families. As a means to this end, the Institute provides support for the Child and Family Services Center, seeks and administers grants that provide external funding for research and training activities of the division, and provides opportunities for the continuing professional development of students, faculty members, and area school and mental health professionals.  These activities are conducted through the Institute components described below.

The Child and Family Services Center (CFSC)

The Child and Family Services Center is a community mental health clinic on the Alfred University campus. The CFSC is located in a historic building that was formerly the Pi Alpha Pi sorority house. It is attached to the newer wing of the Powell Institute.  As a training clinic for our graduate students, the CFSC provides assessment and intervention services to the individuals, families, and schools in the communities surrounding Alfred.

Powell Development Program

The Powell Development Program coordinates external funding initiatives to support the research of faculty and training of students in the Division of Counseling and School Psychology. Through the development program, the Institute actively seeks grants to support student training, faculty and student research, and school and agency programs that benefit children and families in our community. Federal, state, and private grant funded programs and activities are administered and managed through the Development Program.

The Institute also provides research grants to individuals conducting research related to the problems of children and families through the Development program. Grants are awarded to Alfred University doctoral students engaged in applied research, and practicing school and mental health professionals interested in conducting field research. Information pertaining to grant application procedures can be obtained through the director of the Institute.

Institute Partnerships

Advanced training for rural school and mental health professionals is provided through Institute partnerships with other universities and community based agencies. The Institute is a training partner with the Family Service Society, which sponsors continuing professional development workshops for area school and mental health professionals. This partnership allows the Institute to provide free admittance to the workshops for students and Division of Counseling and School Psychology field placement supervisors. The Institute also provides the setting for specialized training workshops offered by community agencies and other universities.
