Glidden Parker
Glidden Parker, the founder of Glidden Pottery, attended Alfred University from 1937-1939. After graduating, he established his studio in Alfred where he made his unique stoneware from 1940 to 1957. During busy seasons, fifty-five people were employed to help. At the studio’s height in 1953, some 6,000 pieces were being manufactured every week and sold worldwide.
Glidden later became a stained-glass artist. His work appears in numerous projects in the Southwestern U.S.
His pieces were even displayed on the television series I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz owned a complete Glidden dinnerware set. Gliddenware was additionally featured in other popular television shows from the 1950's. Glidden Pottery remains an interest for serious collectors. His works can be found nationwide in several museums.
